In New York City, Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is an author struggling to complete her second book, teaching at a local college while she deals with constant rewrites and editor hesitancy. She's married to Don (Tobias Menzies), a therapist questioning his professional reach, facing off against patients who doubt his abilities. They have a son in Elliot (Owen Teague), a twentysomething pot shop clerk who doubts his writing abilities, and family in Beth's sister, Sarah (Michaela Watkins), a bored interior designer married to Mark (Arian Moayed), a dispirited actor. One afternoon, Beth and Sarah decide to pay a surprise visit to Don and Mark during a shopping trip, with Beth accidentally overhearing her husband describe his negative feelings about her work-in-progress book. Stung by the information, Beth pulls away from her spouse, inspiring a reconsideration of her life's work, while Don tries to understand the new distance from his wife, reflecting on his communication with patients.
