SERIES 1: As war breaks out, translator Harry Chase vows to help his Polish lover Kasia flee Warsaw, but does not know how to explain this to his sweetheart Lois, who is waiting for him at home in Manchester. A month after the war begins, Warsaw, Poland, is destroyed; Harry longs for news; Kasia joins the Polish resistance.

SERIES 2: Harry struggles to adapt to the realities of desert combat and Lois longs to leave home. In Paris, Henriette is in grave danger, and in Manchester, a mysterious stranger arrives at Robina's door. As Stan and Rajib make a hasty retreat across the desert, Marga reasserts her commitment to the Fuhrer.
