A seminal auteur of Korea's New Wave of cinema, Umbrella Entertainment proudly presents three films by Lee Chang-dong. This collection marks the debut release of the iconic and award-winning films Peppermint Candy (1999), Oasis (2002), and Poetry (2010).
A celebrated literary figure in South Korea, Lee's foray into cinema is shaped by his sincerity and sensitivity at exploring intense tales of the human condition and reflections of trauma. Each film in this collection serves as a searing analysis of the state's impact on the individual and Korea's turbulent modern history.
PEPPERMINT CANDY (1999): Backtracking from his suicide as a broken and depressed man, this film recounts the life of Yong-ho (Sul Kyung-gu), from his tragic demise to his innocent and idealistic youth, in reverse order. In between, he is a student with photography aspirations, a solider, a police officer and eventually an investor who losses a small fortune in the stock market. He is also a husband, but his marriage to Hong-ja (Moon So-ri) leaves them both unhappy as Yong-ho continues to obsess over someone else.
OASIS (2002): Set against the turbulent backdrop of South Korea from the 1980s to the 1990s, the series depicts the story of three young people who fight fiercely to protect their dreams, friendship, and their one and only first love.
POETRY (2010): Korean grandmother Mija comes to terms with the early onset of Alzheimer's while dealing with the fallout from a brutal family crime. Her teenage grandson is linked to the violent death of a girl, and she finds herself caught up in a conspiracy to pay hush money to the dead girl's family. Mija's tendency to become lost in poetry, and the wonders of nature, causes her mind to wander at the wrong time, with unfortunate consequences.
