Time and motion authority Erroll Wallace (Anthony Hopkins) is hired to boost the sustainability of Balls, an ailing moccasin factory on the outskirts of 60's Melbourne. concocting a strategy that involves massive layoffs and the cessation of production in favour of importation. Wallace is ready to set his plan in motion when the unthinkable happens...the indifferent efficiency expert finds himself warming to the menagerie of oddballs and eccentrics on the factory floor and it's not long before his frigid facade begins to crack. With no time to spare, Wallace must enlist the help of lovelorne clerk Carey (Ben Mendelsohn), scheming salesman Kim (Russell Crowe) and delightful shop-girl Wendy (Toni Collett) to halt proceedings and save the future of Balls.
