THE KILLING FIELDS: The true story of one man's heroism and the struggle for two men to reunite. New York Times correspondent Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) is sent to Cambodia in 1973 to cover the war between the revolutionary Khmer Rouge and the government. He meets Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor): a local journalist who becomes his trusted assistant, interpreter, and friend. When the Khmer Rouge troops enter Phnom Penh in April 1975 and seize control of the country, Pran throws himself at their mercy to save the lives of Schanberg and several other foreign correspondents. What follows for Pran, and for all Cambodians, is unspeakable horror. Whilst Schanberg spends four and a half years seeking news of his friend, nearly half the population of seven million are massacred by the Khmer Rouge or die of starvation and disease. The once rich Cambodian countryside now bears a new name: "The Killing Fields".
THE MISSION: In the 1750's, a Spanish Jesuit priest Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) enters the South American jungle to build a mission and convert a community of Guaran Indians to Christianity. A mercenary and slaver Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro) makes his living kidnapping native Indians and selling them to the nearby plantations. After slaying his brother Felipe (Aidan Quinn) in a duel fought over his fiance Mendoza spirals into guilt and depression before Father Gabriel challenges Mendoza to undertake a suitable penance. Mendoza joins the mission and together he and Father Gabriel work to help care for the Guaran tribe. Unknown to them a new treaty is signed between Portugal and Spain that sounds the death knell of the Jesuit missions. Father Gabriel and Mendoza find themselves fighting the Colonial Army sent to suppress them--the one armed with the love of God the other with the sword.
FAT MAN AND LITTLE BOY: Assigned to oversee the development of the atomic bomb, General Leslie Groves (Paul Newman) is a stern military man determined to have the project go according to plan. Groves selects J. Robert Oppenheimer (Dwight Schultz) as the key scientist on the top-secret operation, but the two men clash fiercely on a number of issues. Despite their frequent conflicts, Groves and Oppenheimer ultimately push ahead with two bomb designs--the bigger "Fat Man" and the more streamlined "Little Boy".
CITY OF JOY: Farmer Hasari Pal (Om Puri) moves his family to Calcutta to start a new life. Settling in the city's poorest area (the "city of joy"), he finds Texan doctor Max (Patrick Swayze), who has been assaulted and robbed, lying in the street. Hasari takes him to his district, where the homeless and lepers live. Max becomes friends with Hasari and clinic doctor Joan (Pauline Collins), and Hasari gets a job as a rickshaw driver. Max soon plunges into his new life.
